The Bully vs the B-movie

What he has to say:

You may or may not have heard that James Cameron recently had some, not so flattering, words for the makers of Piranha 3D. "Piranha 3D" was "an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D," Cameron preached. He then continued: "It just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D."

Well Jim, I hate to break this to you, but despite your claims, you are not "King of the World."

First of all, not only did you not invent the 3D technology (which you seem to think is the case), you don't own exclusive rights to it. On top of that, but you weren't even the first guy to bring it back to mainstream audiences! A long time ago it was a very popular gimmick. The last remnants of it died off somewhere in the 80s, until it was brought back a few years ago. That honor belongs to a man named Eric Brevig, who directed the 2008 version of Journey to the Center of the Earth. While not a horror film, Journey is exactly what Cameron is talking about. It's a gimmick (and it should be). Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking 3D is anything but a gimmick. It is meant to make audiences do stupid things like reach out and try to touch something on screen or dodge an incoming object. It is not something that makes the quality of your script any better or worse Mr. Cameron.

Additionally, I feel the need to address his use of the words "cheapens the medium." I find it rather ironic that Cameron has a problem with this medium being used for movies he deems unworthy, because he's the same man who has at least 3 different versions of the movie on DVD. If you don't think that is a gimmick Mr. Cameron, your ego is bigger than I already thought. And if that wasn't enough, you have rereleased the same damn movie (the highest grossing movie of all time) just this past month! Aren't you supposed to be all eco-friendly? I’ve got to think that having those DVDs made (just so you can make even more money) is a tremendous waste.

Finally, and perhaps the funniest part in this massive display of ego and hypocrisy, is this little tidbit from film history. Many years ago there was a movie created named Piranha Part Two: The Spawning. I will give you a gold star if you can tell me who directed it!
