Fun Friday: Volume 2, Issue 6

What he has to say:

Horror movies are many things, one of which is a haven for aspiring actors and actresses. The genre doesn’t always get respect – and sometimes deservedly so given the crap it can churn out – so it’s easy for inexperienced actors to get a part in a horror movie. Big names aren’t above the genre either. Many have done horror flicks they wished you didn’t know about.

For some reason, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels have attracted a number of actors that went on to bigger and better things. Before Renee Zellweger got her breakout role in Jerry  MaGuire, she starred in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. The funny part is, she wasn’t alone! Before he became known as an easy going, zen-loving, stud who never met a shirt he couldn’t get rid of, Matthew McConaughey played one of the killers trying to get at Renee and friends in this crapfest. There’s yet another big name in this series of films and he’s the most accomplished of them all. Viggo Mortensen has been in a ton of movies, but most of the public knows him as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But long before that, he played one of those cannibalistic killers in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3.

Jennifer Aniston is one of the most talked about celebrities in the world. That is due – in large part – because of her stint on the tv show Friends. But long before she was known for “The Rachel” she was in a little horror movie called Leprechaun; and yes it’s about a killer leprechaun who wants his pot of gold. You can watch the trailer for it here. He

Kevin Bacon has been in so many movies that he’s got a game named after him as a result. But before all of that came this scene from Friday the 13th

Not to be outdone by Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger has also had a brush with Hollywood. The original A Nightmare on Elm Street stars none other than Captain Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp. He is perhaps the most famous horror movie alum of all time.

Or is he? I bet you didn’t know Leonardo DiCaprio was in a crappy horror movie. In fact, his first movie ever was none other than Critters 3. Anyone else get a kick out of the fact several of these people were not only in a bad horror movie, but a sequel to one? It just goes to show you the roles people will take to get a break. He

What kind of list would this be without mentioning Jamie Lee Curtis and her appearance in Halloween? Like DiCaprio and Depp, this was also her first movie. That’s not even the best part of her horror movie roots. I’m sure many of you know this, but I have to acknowledge the fact that her mother was in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.  Pretty cool stuff.
