True Lies

What he said:

I caught this on TV the other day and it was first time I had seen it in years. I was reminded of just how brilliant it is. It is easy to blow it off as a mindless action flick, especially if you have not seen it in a while. I promise you it is more clever than you may remember.

Arnold is usually entertaining (if nothing else). Bill Paxton the same; his style of overacting is legendary. Jamie Lee Curtis fit in just fine with the boys. But what really makes this movie work was the fact that it took the silliness and ran with it.

A lot of movies go all out with the action and expect that to carry the movie. Thus enters the mistake. Don't get me wrong. I love a good action flick. But one that relies solely on big explosions alone doesn't bode well. Humor is always welcome, which this movie has plenty of.

It is almost a spoof of action movies, but still manages to have fun, entertaining (and not in a way that’s insulting) action sequences. It knows that it's silly and that's why it works. You find yourself laughing at it one minute, mouthing "Woh!"  to yourself the next. It's a wonderful mix of absurdity and ass-kicking.

But it also really ran with the ridiculousness. It's almost (but not quite) a spoof of action movies.

Rating: Thumbs up.
